Choosing a house number sign

Every sign in this collection is cut, engraved and hand-finished to order in African Iroko hardwood, Perspex® acrylic, or the two layered together. Nothing is held in stock, so the number, the finish and the size are all chosen at the point of ordering.

Start with the distance from the road

Size is the decision that matters most, and it follows from one measurement: how far the sign will sit from the point a driver reads it. As a working guide, 75–100mm numerals suit a frontage within ten metres of the road, and 100–150mm suits ten to twenty metres. Signs here run from 120mm up to 300mm across, with most designs offered in three sizes.

Match the material to the wall

Warm materials sit comfortably against brick and stone — Iroko hardwood, bronze and deep tones. Flat, cool finishes read crisply against render and painted stucco. Contrast matters more than colour: a dark sign on dark brick is the most common and most expensive mistake.

Decide how it will be fixed

Standoff fixings hold the sign clear of the wall, which suits uneven brickwork and lets water drain behind the plaque. Where drilling is not possible, industrial adhesive bonds well to smooth, non-porous surfaces such as uPVC, glass and sound render. Standoff kits are available in silver, gold, bronze and black.
